Young Brahmin, I teach people how their actions become karma; I teach them how they have been born from the cause of the karma; I teach them how they live in the justice of their karma, meaning how they get exactly what they deserve.  And now I will teach you what to do in the future; why indeed you should rely on karma.

Let me tell you, young man, what karma is like.  Karma creates the divisions between people.  It puts some people into the higher classes, it puts some into the middle classes, and it puts some into the lowest classes.

¨ Killing any living being.

 

¨ Being happy that someone has killed any living being.

 

¨ Speaking in a positive way about it when someone kills

any living being.

I’ll tell you a story that will be an example for all this.  There was a monk who lived in Kasmarya,[5] a city here in India.  The monk had already reached the level of an enemy destroyer.[6]  One day, he was sitting enjoying the day on the porch of one of the houses there.

Right in front of the porch was a busy street.  The monk saw someone leading a cow on a rope down the street; the cow was screaming in terror.  The monk suddenly cried out, “Oh no!  How could it be!”

“’If you love me, my son, then I ask you to always continue these annual sacrifices, after I am gone.’  The son responded to these directions by saying, ‘Of course Father, I’ll do exactly as you say.’

“The father did die, and because—out of ignorance—he had been taking life, he was reborn as a cow belonging to the very same family.  And then he was killed on the altar; and then he was reborn there once again; and he was killed on the altar again.  And now this will be the sixth time he’s been slaughtered.”  And then the monk spoke the following lines, out of compassion for the cow:

MCHOD SBYIN YANG KHYOD BDAG GIS BYAS,

PHYUGS MANG POR YANG KHYOD BDAG GIS BSAD NA,

 

Who set up the altar?  You did it yourself.

Who made the sacrifices?  You did them yourself.

Who killed so many cows?  You did it yourself.

And it wasn’t without purpose that the monk cried out—for that would be of help to no one.  Rather, we are meant to learn something about actions like setting up these kinds of altars; on down even to actions such as enjoying the spectacle of battle, where many living beings—humans and horses and the like—are torn from this life.  Or even taking an interest in souvenirs from a war.[7]

In the Sutra on Darkness the Conqueror has as well spoken:

 

O Ananda, those who commit the act of taking the life of any living thing; and who do this on a regular basis, and kill many times over, are setting up the causes for a rebirth into the realm of hell; or into the realm of the animals; or into the realm of the craving spirits.[8]

 

The point is that—even if all we do is kill living things occasionally, or kill even a small creature, then it creates karmic seeds for our life to be shorter than it would have been.

¨ Stop taking the life of any living being at all.

 

¨ Speak well of those who have given up taking the life of any being.

 

¨ Encourage others not to take any life.

 

¨ Speak well even of those who encourage others not to take life.

¨ Offer comfort and safety to any living being who is faced with any kind of fear.

 

¨ Learn to feel compassion for any living being who has no one to protect them.

¨ Help them in material ways, with food for example.

 

¨ Love the poor, and help them.

 

¨ Recognize your previous attraction to things like watching reports or enactments of war and such violence, and to stop it.

 

¨ Do any kind of good that you can.

The demons who steal life

There are other kinds of karma that cause us to fall ill frequently.  Here is a list:

 

¨ Being upset or angry.

 

¨ Striking another living being with our fist, or even our open hand.

¨ Being happy when anyone has struck any living being with their fist, or their open hand.

 

¨ Talking about how good it would be to strike a certain living being or beings, whether it be with a fist or an open hand.[10]

 

¨ Encouraging someone else to actually do so.

¨ Being happy when someone you don’t like falls ill.

 

¨ Being unhappy when someone you don’t like recovers from a sickness.

 

¨ Giving a sick person something to eat or drink which would hurt them further.

 

¨ Giving a sick person food that would be difficult for them to digest, and thus hurt their recovery.

 

These then are actions which can cause you to fall ill more frequently.

There are certain kinds of karma that can prevent illness.  Here again is a list:

 

¨ Never strike another living being, be it with your fist or your open hand.

 

¨ Never encourage another person to strike any living being, either with the fist or the open hand.

 

¨ Never say good things about the act of striking any living being, be it with the fist or the open hand.

 

¨ Never feel happy that someone has done so.

¨ Always serve others who are sick, whether it be a layperson; an ordained person; someone who is your elder, or even someone who is younger.

¨ Offer them food which will help them recover.

 

 

These are the kinds of karma that can prevent illness.

¨ Anger towards any living being.

 

¨ Holding on to this anger afterwards.

 

¨ Hidden resentment towards any living being.

 

¨ Starting to feel upset at any living being.

Sanskrit edition of the sutra

 

What follows is a Sanskrit edition of the sutra (from Sylvain Levi; see bibliography).  It does not entirely match the standard and well-edited Tibetan edition upon which we have based the present translation, but in many parts it is exactly the same, and exciting to work with.

 

We have included it here for the benefit of students, and inserted the corresponding section numbers of the translation.  In some places, Levi has abbreviated words; where the replacement is simple we have restored these sections, and otherwise indicated them with a caret mark ^.

 

Sanskrit editions over the centuries were copied out by hand each time (rather than printed from a standardized block, as in Tibet), and so there are very numerous differences between the manuscripts.  We have not attempted to make any corrections; a standard Sanskrit edition of the work is a huge project in itself and will have to await a later date and more resources.

Tathā bakapratyekabrahmasūtraṃ varṇayanti sma.  Tena kila ṛṣibhūtena pañcābhijñena tṛṣṇārtasya sārthasya pathabhraṣṭasya upari ṛddhyā varṣam pātitam.  Tadarthaṃ ca Bhagavatā gāthā bhāṣitā. tat te purāṇaṃ vrataśīlavṛttaṃ  svapnād vibuddho ’ham iha smarāmi. tatra ca sārthe bodhisattvaḥ sārthavāho ‘bhūt. ya eṇīkūle janatāṃ gṛhītām. eṇī nāma nadī yasyā anukūle rājā kaścid gṛhītaḥ pratyamitreṇa [p. 35] himavantam anupraviśya sa nīyamāna eva vadhyam prāptaḥ sabalavāhanaḥ tena ṛṣibhūtena ṛddhyā vātavarṣam muktam.  Sa copāyena pratyamitrajanakāyo vibhrāmitaḥ sa rājā mokṣitaḥ tat te dvitiyaṃ vrataśīlavṛttaṃ  svapnād vibuddho ‘nusmarāmi. sa ca rājā bodhisattvo babhūva. gaṇgāsrotasi nāvā.  Gṛhītā nāgena ghoreṇa ṛddhikena. sa ca tadā ṛṣir gaṇgākūle maharddhikaḥ pañcābhijñaḥ pratiśarati. tena ca kāyaḥ krandamāno jīvitena nirāśas tato mokṣitaḥ.  Tat te tṛtīyaṃ vrataśīlavṛttaṃ  svapnād vibuddho ‘nusmarāmi. tasyāṃ ca nāvāyāṃ nausvāmi bodhisattvas tena kālenābhūt.  Evaṃvidhaṃ te trividhaṃ karma kṛtam, tato ’tīva dīrghāyuḥ.

Yathā kecid ācāryāḥ kathayanti.  Bhagavān āha.  Bhūtapūrvam bhikṣavo Jambudvīpe sarvajanapadamārī vartate sma.  Athānyatareṇa sattvenānyalokadhātau sthitena ṛddhimataḥ sakāśāc chrutam.  Yathā Jambudvīpe sarvamārī pātiteti.  Tena kṛtapuṇyena praṇidhānaṃ [p. 36] kṛtam.  Jambudvīpe upapadyāhaṃ sarvasattvānāṃ vyādhipraṇāśāya jāyeyeti.  Sa tatropapannaḥ.  Ye ca sattvāṣ tṛṣitās teṣām pānīyena vyādhiṃ nāśayati.  Ye ca bubhukṣitās teṣām bhaktena vyādhiṃ nāśayati.  Evaṃ yena yasyārthas tenaiva tasya vyādhiṃ nāśayati.  Na nāma tasya kiṃcid apy anauṣadhaṃ.  Yad yad eva gṛhya prayacchati tat tad evauṣadham.  Tasya Jambudvīpakair manuṣyaiḥ sarvauṣadhir ekanāma kṛtam.  Atha bhikṣavaḥ sarvauṣadhivaidyarājo bahūnāṃ sattvasahasrāṇāṃ jīvitāni dattvā kālagataḥ kālāntareṇa mithilāyāṃ rājakule upapannaḥ.  Tato’pi tena mahādevabhūtena asītikṣatriyasahasrāṇi dharmadeśanayā pravrajitāni.  Jambudvīpe ’śītivarṣasahasrāṇi manuṣyāṇām āyur na parikṣiṇam.  Tataś cyutaḥ kālāntareṇa kuśīnagaryām māndhātā saṃvṛttaḥ.  Bhūyaś ca saptasūryopadeśe [p. 37] sunetro nāma mānavo vijñeyaḥ.  Ahaṃ sa bhikṣavas tena kālena Sarvauṣadhivaidyarājo ’bhūt.  Tasya karmaṇo vipākena mahādevasyāyuḥpramāṇaṃ yojayitavyam.  Māndhātṛsunetrābhyām apy evāyuḥpramāṇam yojayitavyam.

Tatra katamat karma tiryagyonyupapattisaṃvartanīyam. ucyate.  madhyamaṃ kāyavāṃmanoduścaritaṃ vicitraṃ rāgasamutthi- taṃ karma vicitraṃ dveṣasamutthitaṃ karma vicitram mohasa- mutthitaṃ karma.  mātāpitroḥ pravrajitānāṃ cākalpikapradānam. tiryagyonigatānāṃ satvānām avahasanam.  tathā praṇidhānakarma yathā govratikakukkuravratikaprabhṛtīnām praṇidhānam atropapa- dyeyam iti.

 

a)## yathā ca bodhisatvasya siṃha jātake ’vadānaṃ vaktavyam. yathā ca varṣākārasya brāhmaṇasya markaṭopapattiḥ .  tad yathā [p. 45] varṣākāreṇa brāhmaṇena sthaviramahākāśyapo bhikṣū rājagṛ- hasyoparimeṇa gṛdhrakūṭāt parvatād ṛṣigiripārśvaṃ vihāyasā gacchan dṛṣṭaḥ.  tena praduṣṭacittena devadattājātaśatrusaṃsargād vāgduścaritaṃ kṛtam.  eṣa śramaṇo vihāyasā gacchan parvatāt parvataṃ gacchati.  tad yathā markeṭo vṛkṣād vṛkṣam eva.  Bhagavataḥ kathitam.  varṣākāreṇa brāhmaṇena krodhajātena vāgduścaritaṃ kṛtam.  tasya ko vipākaḥ.  Bhagavān āha.  asya vāgduścaritasya vipā- kato varṣākāro brāhmaṇaḥ pañca janmāntaraśatāni markeṭo bhavi- ṣyatīti.  tatas tena varṣākāreṇa śrutam Bhagavatā nirdiṣṭatvaṃ kila pañca janmāntaraśatāni markeṭo bhaviṣyatīti.  sa saṃvignacittam prasāditavān.  tena Bhagavān parinirvāṇakāle pṛṣṭaḥ.  tasya karmaṇaḥ kadā parikṣaya iti.  Bhagavān āha.  tāny eva pañca janmāntaraśatāni kiṃ tu rājagṛhe utpatsyase yathā jambvā Jambudvīpe jāyate. yatroṣṭrikāmātrāṇi phalāni.  yathā kṣaudramadhv aneḍakam eva- [p. 46] māsvādāni.  tatropapattir bhaviṣyati.  tato vyutthitasya te sugatir bhaviṣyati.  yathā cittapradūṣaṇena siṃheṣūpapannaḥ.  tadarthaṃ ca Bhagavatā gāthā bhāṣitā. dīrghā jāgarato rātrir dīrghaṃ śrāntasya yojanam dīrgho bālasya saṃsāraḥ saddharmam avijānataḥ. idaṃ karma tiryagyonyupapattisaṃvartanīyam.

Tatra katamat karma yamalokopapattisaṃvartanīyam.  ncyate. kruddhasya pratihatacittasya kāyavāṃmanoduścaritam.  lobho viṣama- lobho mithyājīvo jighāṃsitapipāsitasya kruddhasya kālakriyā.  vas- tuṣv abhiṣaktacittasya kālakriyā.

Tatra katamat karma rūpāvacaradevopapattisaṃvartanīyam. ucyate.  susamāptāḥ susamāhitās tato viśiṣṭatarāḥ paripūrṇā daśa kuśalāḥ karmapathāḥ.  idaṃ karma rūpāvacaradevopapattisaṃvar- tanīyam.

 

XXII.

Tatra katamat karmārūpyāvacaradevopapattisaṃvartanīyam. ucyate.  catasra ārūpyasamāpattayaḥ.  ākāśānantyāyatanam.  vijñānā- nantyāyatanam.  ākiṃcanyānantyāyatanam.  naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyata- nam.  etāḥ samāpattayo bhāvitā bahulīkṛtāś ca bhavanti.  idaṃ karmā- rūpyāvacaradevopapattisaṃvartanīyam.

 

XXIII.

Tatra katamat karma kṛtaṃ nopacitam.  Ucyate.  yat kṛtvā karma āstīryati jihreti vigarhati vijugupsati deśayati ācaṣṭe vyaktī- [p. 48] karoti.  āyatyāṃ saṃvaram āpadyate.  na punaḥ karoti.  idaṃ karma kṛtaṃ nopacitam.

 

XXIV.

Tatra katamat karmopacitaṃ na kṛtam.  Ucyate.  yat karma kāyena paripūrayitavyam.  tatra praduṣṭacitto vācam bhāṣate evaṃ te kariṣyāmīti.  idaṃ karmopacitaṃ na kṛtam.

Tatra katamat karma kṛtaṃ copacitaṃ ca.  Ucyate.  yat karma sāṃcetanikam.   ##a)## yathoktam Bhagavatā. manaḥpūrvaṃgamā dharmā manaḥśreṣṭhā manojavāḥ manasā cet praduṣṭena bhāṣate vā karoti vā tatas taṃ duḥkham anveti cakraṃ vā vahataḥ padam manaḥpūrvaṃgamā dharmā manaḥśreṣṭhā manojavāḥ manasā cet prasannena bhāṣate vā karoti vā tatas taṃ sukham anveti chāyā vā anuyāyinī. idaṃ karma kṛtaṃ copacitaṃ ca.

 

XXVI.

Tatra katamat karma naiva kṛtaṃ naivopacitam.  Ucyate.  yat karma sāṃcetanikaṃ svapnāntare kṛtaṃ kāritaṃ vā.  idaṃ karma naiva kṛtaṃ naivopacitam.

 

XXVII.

Tatra katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo nara- keṣūpapannaḥ paripūrṇaṃ nairayikamāyuḥ kṣapayitvā cyavati.  Ucyate. [p. 49] ihaikatyena narakīyaṃ karma kṛtam bhavaty upacitam.  sa tat karma kṛtvā nāstīryati.  na jihrīyati na vigarhati na jugupsati na deśayati nācaṣṭe na vyaktīkaroti nāyatyāṃ saṃvaram āpadyate bhūyasyā mātrayā hṛṣyati.  prītim utpādayati.  yathā devadattakokālikādayaḥ. idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo narakeṣūpapannaḥ paripūr- ṇanairayikam āyuḥ kṣapayitvā cyavati.

 

XXVIII.

Tatra katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo nara- keṣūpapanno ’rdhanairayikam āyuḥ kṣapayitvā cyavati.  Ucyate.  ihaika- tyena nārakīyaṃ karma kṛtam bhavaty upacitam.  sa tat kṛtvā nāstī- ryati na jihrīyati na vigarhati na jugupsate na deśayati nācaṣṭe na vyaktīkaroti.  nāyatyāṃ saṃvaram āpadyate.  api tu na bhūyasyā mātrayā hṛṣyati.  na prītim utpādayati.  idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo narakeṣūpapanno ’rdhanairayikam āyuḥ kṣapayitvā cyavati.

 

XXIX.

Tatra katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo narakeṣū- papannamātra eva cyavati.  Ucyate.  ihaikatyena nārakīyaṃ karma kṛtam bhavaty upacitaṃ ca.  sa tat kṛtvāstīryati.  jihrīyati.  vigarhati vijugupsati ācaṣṭe.  deśayati.  vyaktīkaroti.  āyatyāṃ saṃvaram āpad- yate.  na punaḥ kurute.  sa cen narakeṣūpapadyate upapannamātra eva cyavati.

 

a)## yathā rājājātaśatruḥ.  tena devadattasahāyenānantaryakarma kṛtam.  pitṛvadhaḥ.  saṃghabhedaḥ.  dhanapālamokṣaṇam.  śilāyan- tramokṣaṇam devadattasyādeśena.  tasmād avīcinarakagamanaṃ śrutvā tena saṃvignena Bhagavati cittam prasāditam.  śrāmaṇya- phalasūtre ’tyayadeśanaṃ kṛtam.  pratisaṃdadhāti kuśalamūlāni. tena maraṇakāle cittam prasāditam.  asthibhir api buddham Bhaga- [p. 50] vantaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi.  sa upapannamātra eva cyavati.  idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo narakeṣupapannamātra eva cyavati.

 

XXX.

Tatra katamat karma niyatopapattisaṃvartanīyam.  Ucyate. yat kṛtvā kvacid upapattaupariṇāmayati amutropapadyeyam iti.  sa tatropapadyate. yathā Bhagavato jātake syāmākajātakaprabhṛtiṣu praṇidhānavaśād upapattir varṇyate.  idaṃ karma niyatopapattisaṃvartanīyam.

 

XXXI.

Tatra katamat karmāniyatopapattisaṃvartanīyam.  Ucyate.  yat kṛtvā na kvacid upapattau pariṇāmayati amutropapadyeyam iti. yathā satvāḥ karmavaśād upapadyante.  idaṃ karmāniyatopapatti- saṃvartanīyam.

 

XXXII.

Tatra katamat karma deśāntaravipākam ucyate.  yat karma tasminn eva janmāntare vā deśāntaragatasya vipacyate śubham aśu- bhaṃ vā.  tat karma deśāntaravipākam yathā Bhagavān kathayati bhūtapūrvam bhikṣavo Jambudvīpe manuṣyāṇam aparimāṇamāyur bha- vati.  yathā rājño māndhātuḥ.  athānyatarasmin nagare maitrāyajño [p. 51] nāma sārthavāhaputro babhūva.  sa pañcaśatasahāyaparivṛta udyānaṃ gataḥ.  taiś ca sahāyair uktaḥ asmin nagare baṇijas tava pitaram pūr- vaṇgamaṃ kṛtvā mahāsamudram avatīrya suvarṇa bhūmiprabhṛtīni desāntarāṇi gatvā dvīpāntarāṇi ca paśyanti.  dravyopārjanaṃ ca kurvanti.  vayam api tvām pūrvaṇgamaṃ kṛtvā samudram avatīrya dravyopārjanaṃ kariṣyāmo dvīpāntarāṇi ca drakṣyāmaḥ tatas tena evam iti pratiṣrutam.  sa rātrau gatvā mātaram āpṛcchati.  amba suvar- ṇabhūmiṃ gamiṣyāmaḥ.  tasya mātāha.  aparimāṇam putra dravyaṃ gṛhe tiṣṭhati.  na gantavyam iti.  sa mātur vacanena nivṛttaḥ.  sa bhūya udyānaṃ gataḥ sahāvair uktaḥ.  tam arthaṃ vijñāpayāmaḥ.  tena tathāstv iti pratiśrutam.  sa bhūyo mātaraṃ gatvāpṛcchati.  bhūyaś ca mātrā pādapatanān nivartitaḥ.  evaṃ tṛtīyam api.  sa kālāntareṇa bhūya [p. 52] udyānaṃ gatvā sahāyair uktaḥ.  tava doṣad vayam api na gacchāmaḥ. pṛcchāmo vayam.  trayodaśyāṃ gamiṣyāma iti.  tena mātur aviditam eva bahir bahu bhāṇḍaṃ nirgamitam.  tasya gamanakāle prasthitasya mātā dvāre pādapatanaṃ kṛtvā sthitvā.  putra na gantavyam iti.  sa kruddho mātuḥ pādam mastake dattvātikrāntaḥ samudrakūlaṃ ca gataḥ.  tena sahāya uktāḥ.  samudram avataratāṃ na jñāyate jīvitam maraṇaṃ ca.  vayaṃ sarva evāṣṭāṇgasamanvāgatam poṣadhaṃ gṛhṇā- maḥ.  tais tathāstva iti pratipannam.  poṣadhaṃ ca gṛhītam.  te samu- dram avatīrṇaḥ.  samudramadhyagatānāṃ ca teṣāṃ viṣamavātādyā- hataḥ poto vinaṣṭas tena sarve kālagatāḥ.  maitrāyajñāś ca ma.  pra. ṭamukhyān avabaddhaṃ tāmraghaṭaṃ ca gṛhya samudrakūla uttīrṇaḥ sa paryaṭamānaḥ sauvarṇaprākāraṃ nagaram paśyati.  ārāmasampan- naṃ vanasampannam.  puṣkariṇīsampannam.  dhūpitadhūpanam muk- tasmāt kālāntareṇa nirgataḥ.  sa bhūyo gacchan nagaram paśyati. rūpyamayena prākāreṇa.  ārāmasampannaṃ vanasampannam.  pūrva- vad yāvat.  tasmād apy aṣṭāv apsaraso nirgatāḥ.  tābhir apy asau gṛhya praveśitaḥ.  sa tābhiḥ sārdham bahūni varṣāṇi krīḍitavān.  bahūni varṣaśatāni.  bahūni varṣasahasrāṇi bahūni varṣaśatasahasrāṇi kriḍita- vān.  pūrvavat.  tato’pi kālāntareṇa nirgataḥ.  bhūyaś ca paryaṭan nagaram paśyati.  vaidūryamayena prākāreṇa ārāmasampannaṃ vana- sampannam.  puṣkariṇīsampannam.  dhūpitadhūpanam.  muktapuṣpā- vakīrṇam avasaktapaṭṭadāmakalāpam.  tasmād api ṣoḍaśapraso tābhir apy uktaḥ.  āryaputra tavāyam pṛthivī- pradeśo’ pūrvaḥ.  asmād vihārāt tena na nirgantavyam.  atha nirgacchasi. uttarāmukhena na gantavyam iti.  sa tāsām pramadād ratikhinno nirga- taḥ.  uttarābhimukhena gacchan kaṇṭakāṭavīm prapannaḥ.  atha kṛṣṇaya- sena prākāreṇa nagaram paśyati.  sa tatra praviṣṭaḥ.  praviṣṭamātrasya ca nagaradvāram pihitam.  ūrdhavam paśyati.  prākāro vardhate bhairavaṃ  ca śabdaṃ śṛṇoti.  tatrasthaś ca cintayati.  kim etad iti.  sa tatra gataḥ. atha paśyati puruṣasyāsidharaṃ cakraṃ śiraś chinatti.  sa bhītaḥ pṛcchati.  kim etad bho puruṣa.  nairayikapuruṣaḥ prāha.  eṣa pra- tyekanarakaḥ.  Maitrāyajña āha.  kiṃ tvayā pāpakarma kṛtam iti.  sa kathayati.  asmin Jambudvīpe mahākośalī nāma nagaram.  tatrāham mahāsārthavāhaputro ’bhūvam.  sa pañcabhiḥ sahāyaśataiḥ saho- dyānaṃ gataḥ.  te kathayanti.  tava pitā sārthavāho ’smākam pūrva- puruṣo’ sti.  pūrvaṇgamaṃ kṛtvā deśāntarāṇi gatvā dravyopārjanāni kurvanti.  suvarṇabhūmiṃ siṃhaladvīpaṃ ca prabhṛtīni ca dvīpānta- rāṇi paśyanti.  vayam api tvayā pūrvaṇgamena deśāntaram paśyāma iti.  vayam api gacchāma iti pratiśrutam.  so’ haṃ gṛhaṃ gatvā māta- ram āpṛṣṭavān.  aham evaṃ deśāntaraṃ gamiṣyāmīti.  mātā ma āha. putra tava pitā samudram avatīrṇo deśāntaraṃ gata eva kālagataḥ. tvam ekaputrakaḥ.  prabhūtaṃ gṛhe dravyaṃ tiṣṭhati.  na gantavyam. iti.  mayā na gacchāmīti pratiśrutam.  evaṃ dvitīyaṃ tṛtīyaṃ catur- tham apy āpādapatanaṃ nivartitaḥ.  kālāntareṇāham bhūyo ’py udyā- naṃ gataḥ sahāyair uktaḥ.  avaśyaṃ gantavyam iti.  gamiṣyāmīti mayā pratiśrutam.  atha mama prasthitasya mātā dvāre pādapatanaṃ kṛtvā sthitā.  putra nārhasi mām parityaktum iti.  tasyāham mastake pādaṃ dattvā prakrāntaḥ.  so’ ham pañcabhiḥ sahāyaśataiḥ sārdhaṃ samu- drakūlaṃ gataḥ.  aṣṭāṃgasamanvāgatam poṣadhaṃ gṛhya samudram avatīrṇaḥ.  suvarṇabhūmiprasthitānām asmākaṃ viṣamavātādyāhataḥ poto vinaṣṭaḥ.  te sarve kālagatāḥ.  ahaṃ tu bahubhir divasaiḥ kathaṃ- cana samudrād uttīrṇo ’tha prapīḍyamānaḥ gṛhītam.  tasya karmaṇo vipākena caturṣu mahānagareṣu pratyekasvargasva….mātuḥ śirasi pādaṃ dattvā gataḥ tasya karmaṇo vipākena mamāsidharaṃ cakraṃ śiraś chinatti.  maitrayājñaś cintayati. mayāpy etad eva karma kṛtam.  upasthito mamāpi karmavipāka iti. nairayikapurusaḥ prāha.  kutas tvam.  maitrāyajñaḥ kathayati.  asti Jambudvīpe tāmaliptaṃ nāma mahānagaram.  tato’ ham.  mayāpi caitat sarvam anuṣṭheyam.  nairayikapuruṣaḥ prāha.  asti mayādyānta- rikṣe ghoṣaḥ śrutaḥ kṣīṇas tava karmavipākaḥ maitrāyajño nāma sārthavāhaputraḥ adyāgamiṣyati.  etad eva karma kṛtveti.  maitrāyajña āha.  kim bhojanam.  sa āha.  ata eva mastakāc chidyamānād yat pūyaśo- ṇitaṃ sravati.  evam uktvā sa puruṣaḥ kālagataḥ patitaḥ maitrāyajño bhītaḥ saṃvignaḥ sarveṇa bhāvena mātāpitroḥ praṇipātaṃ kṛtvāha. ūrdhvam bhavāgravitatān adharād avīciṃ  tiryakprathān agaṇitān api lokadhātūn ātmansva surāsuranaroragabhūtakāye satvāni yāni upagatāni sukhino bhavantu [p. 55] evaṃ cintayitvā sarveṇa bhāvena mātāpitror namaskāraṃ kṛtvā praṇipātaṃ ca praṇidhānaṃ ca kṛtavān.  yatra yatropapadyāmi mātā- pitroḥ śuśruṣāṃ kuryām aham iti.  ye ca kecana satvā pratyeka- narake upapadyante teṣāṃ sarveṣām arthāyāham atrāvasthitaḥ.  ye ca kecana loke yuktās ca muktāś ca taṣāṃ namaḥ.  te mām pālayantu. idam uktvā tasmin nairayikapuruṣaḥ kāle sthitaḥ.  punaś ca praṇi- dhānaṃ kṛtvā punar apy āha. kṛtvādau narakam avīcim ābhavāgrād  ye satvāś cyutigatibandhanāvabaddhāḥ te sarve sukham atināpya dharmayuktaṃ nirvāṇaṃ yad ajaram acyutaṃ spṛśantu. atha tac cakram aspṛśamānaṃ śirasi nityakālam evopari vihāyasi sthitam.  nityaṃ ca kila tasya mātāśiṣam prayuṇkte.  yady asti mama kiṃcit puṇyaphalam pradānena vā śīlena vā brahmacaryeṇa vā pati- vratatvena vā tena puṇyaphalena mama putrasya yatra tatra sthitasya  mā kiṃcit pāpam bhavatu.  tena ca tasya śivam āsīt. b) yathā śyāmajātake saviṣeṇa śareṇa.  śyāmakumārasya mātā- pitror āśīrvācanena śalyaś ca nirgato viṣaṃ ca naṣṭam mṛtaś ca saṃjīvitas tadvat tasyāpi śivam āsīt.  yathā vajrarājagṛhe dha- naṃjayasūtre āryaśāradvatīputreṇoktam tam enam brāhmaṇam  mātāpitarau samam mānitau samyak pūjitau kalyāṇena manasānu- [p. 56] kampete.  adhosī vatana putro dhārmikeṇa karmaguṇena na ca kiṃcit pāpaṃ karma karoti.  sarvaṃ sūtraṃ yojyam.  yathā ca siyālakasūtre Bhagavatoktam.  tam evaṃ gṛhapatiputra mātāpitarau pañcasu sthāneṣu pratyupasthitau pañcasu sthāneṣu pratiṣṭhā- payataḥ tasya punar gṛhapatiputra mātāpitṛbhyām anukampitasya puruṣapudgalasya vṛddhir evam pratyāśaṃsitavyā. c) sa tatra prītyāhāraḥ sthitvā paripūrṇeṣu ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasreṣu  kālagataḥ. d) yathā rājājātaśatrur aparipūrṇa eva nairayikāyuḥpramāṇe cyutaḥ.  abandhyatvāt karmaṇāṃ kadācid atīva śirorujā bhavati. e) atra kṛtapraṇidhānasya maitrāyajñānasya mātāpitṛśuśrūṣā vakta- vyā.  yathā śyāmajātake ’ndhau mātāpitarau hastibhūtena  paripā- litau.  anyeṣu jātakaśateṣu ca. f) atha Bhagavān prāptakālam bhikṣūn āmantrayate.  syād evam bhikṣavo yuṣmākam anyaḥ sa tena kālena tena samayena maitrāyajño nāma sārthavāhaputro babhūveti.  naivaṃ draṣṭavyam.  ahaṃ sa tena kālena tena samayena maitrāyajño nāma sārthavāhaputra āsīt.  tasmāt tarhi bhikṣavo mama vacanaṃ śraddadhānair buddhe sagauravair bhavitavyaṃ dharme saṃghe sagauravair bhavitavyam.  mātāpitṛṣu  ācāryopādhyāyeṣu sagauravair bhavitavyam.  evaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam.  ya evaṃ deśāntaragataḥ sukhaṃ duḥkham pratyanu- [p. 57] bhavati.  yathā maitrāyajñena deśāntaragatena tasminn eva janmani pratyekasvargam pratyekanarakaṃ cānubhūtam.  ya evaṃ deśāntara- gataḥ sukhaṃ duḥkham pratyanubhavati.  idaṃ karma deśāntara- vipākam.  g) etad darśayati Bhagavān.  yathā mayi tathā mātāpitṛṣu.  ācāryo- pādhyāyeṣu vacanakāriṇāṃ samo vipākaḥ iha loke paraloke ca. kathaṃ iha loke samaḥ karmavipāko bhavati.  yathā śrāvastyāṃ daridrapuruṣo Bhagavantaṃ saśrāvakasaṃgham bhuñjānaṃ dṛṣṭvā cittam prasāditavān.  tena mahāpuṇyasambhāra upārjitaḥ rājyasaṃ- vartanīyaṃ karma kṛtam.  tad eva ca mokṣabījam.  tac ca jñātvā Bhagavatā gāthā bhāṣitā  ye tatrābhyanumodante vaiyāvṛtyakarāś ca ye anūnā dakṣiṇā teṣāṃ te ’pi puṇyasya bhāginaḥ. etad eva gāthā samutthānam. manaḥpūrvaṇgamā dharmā manaḥśreṣṭhā manojavāḥ manasā cet prasannena bhāṣate vā karoti vā tatas taṃ sukham anveti chāyā vā anuyāyinī  tataś cyutaś ca deveṣūpapannaḥ.  yathā ca tagaraśikhī nāma pratyekabuddhaḥ.  durbhikṣe daridrapuruṣeṇa sūpaḥ pratipāditaḥ.  sa ca tadahar eva tasmin nagare rājābhiṣiktaḥ tataḥ kālāntareṇa pratyeka- buddhaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ ya eṣa sūtrāntare paripaṭhitaḥ pratyekabuddhas [p. 58] tagaraśikhī nāma.  evaṃ tāvad Bhagavati sāṃdṛṣṭikaścittaprasādasya phalavipākaḥ. h) katham mātāpitṛṣu.  yathā maitrāyajñaḥ sārthavāhaputraḥ ācaturtham pratinivṛtto mātur vacanena caturṣu mahānagareṣu pratyekasvargasukham anubhūtavān.  tat tu tasya mokṣabījam.  evam mātāpiṭṣva api sāṃdṛṣṭikaḥ phalavipākaḥ  i) katham Bhagavati mātāpitṛṣu ca cittapradoṣeṇa narakagam- anam bhavati.  Ucyate.  devadatto Bhagavati cittam pra…to’vīcau mahānarake patitaḥ.  tathā sindhu viṣaye raurukaṃ nāma nagaram. tatra śikhaṇḍī rājaputraḥ pitaraṃ ghātayitvā narake patitaḥ.  evam Bhagavati mātāpitṛṣu ca cittapradūṣaṇena narakagamanam bhavati.  j) tena kāraṇena kiṃ nāsti nānākaraṇam.  Ucyate.  mahāntaṃ.  nānākaraṇam.  Bhagavān anekakalpaśatasahasropārjitakuśalamūla- sambhūtasambhāraḥ anutpannasya mārgasyotpādayitā buddho bo- dhāya mārgaṃ deśayati.  tasmin kṛtaḥ prasādo ’prameyaphalavipākaḥ ante ca nirvāṇam.  mātāpitror mokṣamārgo ’viditaḥ.  api ca na sarvam mātāpitror vacanaṃ kāryam.  santi kecin mithyādarśanopahatacittaḥ putrān bruvanti.  ehi mām avasanaṃ naya.  tava ca bhaviṣyati hitāya [p. 59] sukhāya mama ca.  [prapāte mām pā] tayāgnau vā praveśayeti.  tan naiva kartavyam.  kiṃ kāraṇam.  mātāpitarau ghātayitvāvaśyaṃ narakagamanam.  ata eva Bhagavatā pratiṣiddho na mātāpitṛghātakaḥ pravrājayitavyaḥ nāsti tasya pravrajyā nopasampadā.  nāsti phala- prāptiḥ.  evaṃvidhaṃ varjayitvānyathā samasamā mātāpitara ācāryo- pādhyāyāḥ kathaṃ ca samasamā.  nanu Bhagavatoktam.  mātāpitroḥ putrasneho yāvad asthimajjām āśritya tiṣṭhatya ata eva mātāpitṛbhyām ananujñātasya nāsti pravrajyā.  yathāryarāṣṭrapālaśoṇa prabhṛtayo Bhagavatā mātāpitarāv ananujñāpya na pravrājitāḥ adyāpi tān aṇanujñātān na pravarājayanti.  yathā ca Bhagavati pravarajite śud- dhodanasya putraśokena cakṣuṣī antarhite.  Ucyate.  mātāpitaraḥ pañca sthānāni pratyāśaṃsamānāḥ putram icchanti.  saṃvardhito no vṛddhībhūtān pālayiṣyati kāryaṃ ca kariṣyati dravyasvāmī ca bhaviṣyati.  kālagatānāṃ ca pitṛpiṇḍaṃ dāsyati.  kulavaṃśaś ca cirasthitiko bhaviṣyati.  imāni pañca sthānāni pratyāśaṃsamānā mātāpitaraḥ putram icchanti.  naivam ācāryopādhyāyāḥ kevalam eva kāruṇyam puraskṛtya katham asyā nādikālapravṛttasya saṃsāraca- krasya paryantaṃ kuryād iti.  yathā Bhagavatā vināya uktam. upādhyāyasya śiṣye putrasaṃjñā bhavati.  śiṣyasyāpya upādhyāye pitṛsaṃjñā bhavati.  evam anyonyaniśritāḥ sukhino bhaviṣyanti.  evam ācāryopādhyāyāḥ samasamā mātāpitṛbhiḥ yathā cakravartisūtra  [p. 60] uktam Bhagavatā.  kasya karmaṇo vipākena rājā cakravartī has- tiratnānya aśvaratnāni ca pratilabhate.  dīrgharātraṃ rājā cakra- vartī mātaram pitaraṃ vā svayaṃ vā skandhe vahati vā rathādibhir vāhayati vā.  ācāryopādhyāyān svayaṃ vahati vāhayati vā.  tasya karmaṇo vipākena rājā cakravartī hastyaśvaratnāni pratilabhate. anenāpi kāraṇena samasamā mātāpitara ācāryopādhyāyāś ca.  api tv asty anyatra nānākaraṇam.  gṛhasthānām mātāpitṛ pravrajitāḥ pūjyāḥ. pravrajitānām ācāryopādhyāyā eva pūjanīyāḥ.  yathā mahīṣāsakā gotrāntarīyā vinaye ’rthotpattiṃ dhārayanti.  yathāha Bhagavān.  na bhikṣavaḥ ācāryopādhyāyān anāpṛṣṭvā deśāntaraṃ gantavyam. kasmād.  bhavati bhikṣavo jīvitāntarāyo bhavati brahmacaryān- tarāyo bhavati pātracīvarāntarāyaḥ bhūtapūrvam bhikṣavo mai- trāyajño nāma sārthavāhaputra āsīd iti.  etad evāvadānaṃ yathāvas- thitaṃ vaktavyam.  evam eva samasamā ācāryopādhyāyā mātāpitaraś ca.  yathā coktam Bhagavatā.  yo bhikṣavo mātāpitarau skandhena gṛhya Jambudvīpam paryaṭeta yogodvahanaṃ ca kuryāt caturṣu [p. 61] dvīpeṣu hiraṇyasuvarṇaṃ ca dadyāt.  evam api mātāpitroḥ pratyupa- kāro na kṛto bhavati.  yaś ca punar buddhe prasādayet.  dharme. saṃghe.  pañcasu śikṣāpadeṣu āryakānteṣu śīleṣu pratiṣṭhāpayet.  evam mātāpitṛṇām putraiḥ pratyupakāraḥ kṛto bhavati tac ca sarvam ācāryopādhyāyāḥ kurvanti.  yathāha Bhagavān dakṣiṇāvibhaṇgasūtre. yathānanda pudgalaḥ pudgalam āgamya buddhaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchati dharmaṃ saṃghaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchati yathoktāni ca śikṣāpadāni vakta- vyāni.  tenānanda pudgalena tasya pudgalasya na śakyam pratikartum. yad idam abhivādanapratyutthānamātreṇaivam api prativiśiṣṭatarā ācāryopādhyāyā mātāpitṛbhyām.  yathā ca mahākātyāyanenāvanti- prabhṛtayaḥ paścimajanapadā abhipraśaditāḥ yathā cāryamadhayan- dinena kāśmīrāyām pañca nāgaśatani vinīya deśo ’bhiprasāditaḥ [p. 62] anavataptasarasaś ca kuṃkumam ānīya kaśmīrāyām pratiṣṭhāpi-  tam.  tac cādyāpi lokopabhuktam.  vihāraś ca kārito ’dyāpi ca tatraiva prativasanti.  yathā ārya gavāmpatinā suvarṇabhūmyāṃ yojanaśataṃ janapado ’bhiprasāditaḥ.  yathā ca pūrvavidehā ārya piṇḍo labhāradvājenābhiprasāditā (vihārāś ca kāritā adyāpi tatraiva [p. 63] prativasanti).  yathā cāryamahendreṇa siṃhaladvīpe vibhīṣaṇa prabhṛtayo rākṣasāḥ samaye sthāpitā deśaś cābhiprasāditaḥ yathā cādhyardhaśatake sūtra āryapūrṇena śūrpārake nagare pañco- [p. 64] pāsakaśatāni abhiprasāditāni.  candanamālaś ca vihāraḥ kāritaḥ. yathā ca Bhagavān pañcabhir bhikṣuśataiḥ sārdhaṃ vihāyasā tatra gato janakāyaś cābhiprasāditaḥ api ca kim ekaikasya bhikṣor nāma- grahaṇena kṛtena yato Bhagavān parinirva…ntar yaḥ kaścid vinīto bhikṣur vā bhikṣuṇī vopāsako vopāsikā vā sarve te bhikṣubhir eva vinītāḥ.  yaś ca yenābhiprasāditaḥ sa tasyācāryopādhyāyāś ca eta …ta Bhagavān mātāpitaraḥ pañca sthānāni pratyanuśaṃsamānāḥ putram icchanti.  ācāryopādhyāyās tu kāruṇyān nirvāṇaṃ dharmaṃ deśayanti.  anenāpi kāraṇena mātāpitṛbhya ācāryopādhyāyāḥ prati- viśiṣṭatarā iti.  ata evam āha Bhagavān.  mama bhikṣavo vacanaṃ śraddadhānair Bhagavati paraḥ prasādaḥ kāryaḥ dharme saṃghe mātāpitṛṣv ācāryopādhyāyeṣu paraḥ prasādaḥ kāryaḥ tad vo bhavi- śyati dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāyeti.  idaṃ karma deśāntaravipākam [p. 65]

 

XXXIII.

Katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalaḥ pūrvaṃ sukhito bhūtvā paścād duḥkhito bhavati.  Ucyate.  ihaikatyo dānaṃ yācitaḥ samānaḥ pūrvaṃ prahṛṣṭaḥ pratijānīte pramudito dadāti. dattvā ca khalu pratisārī bhavati.  sa yadā manuṣyeṣūpapadyate. āḍhyeṣu mahādhaneṣu mahābhogeṣu kuleṣūpapadyate.  paścāt tasya te bhogāḥ parikṣayam paryādānaṃ gacchanti.  sa paścād daridro bhavati.  yathāryagopakaḥ tena kila kakucchande samyak- sambuddhe bhikṣusaṃghasya godhenur dattā.  sa paścāt parair garhito na sādhukṛteyaṃ datteti.  tena cittam pradūṣitam.  sa yatra yatropapadyate tatra tatra mahādhano bhavati.  paścāt tena citta- pradoṣeṇa daridro bhavati.  paścime bhave ’pi rājagṛhe nagare [p. 66] ‘nyatarasmin gṛhe pratyājātaḥ.  tasya jāyamānasya mātā kālagatā. anena mātā māritā jāyamānena mūlanakṣatre jāto ‘yam mā nirmūlaṃ kulaṃ kariṣyaty amaṃgalo ‘yam iti mātrā sārdhaṃ śmaśāne utsṛṣṭaḥ. tatrāpi ca mātur ekastanāt kṣīram pragharati tenaiva puṇyānu- bhāvena.  vivṛddhaś ca Bhagavatāgatya pravrājitaḥ.  etac ca sarvam anupūrveṇa Bhagavatā bhikṣūṇāṃ kathitam.  evam anena pūrvaṃ kṣīradhenuḥ prasādajātena dattā paścād vipratisārī saṃvṛttaḥ. tasyedaṃ karmaphalam.  yas tv asau pūrvakaś cittaprasādas tad evāsya mokṣabījam.  yathā ca campāyām mahānagaryām iśvaro gṛhapatiputraḥ.  tena bhṛtyānāṃ haste sarvaṃ dhanaṃ caturdiśam bāṇijyāya preṣitam.  tac ca sarvaṃ deśāntaragataṃ vinaṣṭam.  sa ca parakarmakaraḥ saṃvṛttaḥ.  idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalaḥ pūrvaṃ sukhito bhūtvā paścād duḥkhito bhavati.

 

XXXIV.

Katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalaḥ pūrvaṃ duḥkhito bhūtvā paścāt sukhito bhavati.  Ucyate.  ihaikatyo dānaṃ samādāya yācitaḥ samānaḥ pratijānīte   kṛcchreṇa dadāti.  dattvā tu dānam paścāt prītim utpādayati.  sa yadā manuṣyeṣūtpadyate dari- dreṣu kuleṣūtpadyate.  tasya paścāt te bhogā abhivṛddhiṃ gacch- anti.  atra cāniruddhasyāvadānaṃ vaktavyam.  tena kila rājagṛhe [p. 67] śyāmākataṇḍulabhaktam upariṣṭhasya pratyekabuddhasya piṇḍapāto dattaḥ.  taddivasam eva rājñā tuṣṭenāṣṭau mahāgrāmā dattāḥ.  tac ca paścimakaṃ dāridryam.  yathā tasyaiva vyākaraṇam pūrvāparāntake sūtre.  yathā ca śrāvastyāṃ daridrapuruṣeṇa svajanaphalāni yācitvā kṣetraṃ nītāni karṣaṇārthe.  tasya patnyā paragṛhe bhājanam ādhāya  vrīhim ānīya bhaktaṃ siddham.  atha Bhagavatā śāriputra-maud- galyāyana-mahākāśyapa-subhūtiprabhṛtayaḥ ete uktāḥ.  amukasya  gṛhapater gṛhe prathamam bhaikṣyaṃ grahītavyam iti.  te ca sarve yathānupūrvaṃ tatra gatāḥ.  sarvaiś ca tasmād bhaikṣyaṃ labdham. atha paścād Bhagavān api gataḥ.  tayā striyā jātaprasādayā pariśiṣṭam bhaktaṃ sarvam Bhagavato dattam praṇidhānaṃ ca karoti.  anena Bhagavan kuśalamūlena mā me bhūyaḥ kadācid dāridryaṃ syād iti. tathāstv iti Bhagavatā pratiśrutam.  tadahar eva tasya mahānidhānam prādurbhūtam.  tac chrutvā rājā prasenajit tasmin gṛhe gataḥ. tenoktam.  asmākam pūrvarājabhis te dīnārāḥ sthāpitā iti.  gṛhapatinā tasya tato gṛhyāñjalipūro dattaḥ.  aṃgāraḥ saṃvṛttaḥ.  rājñā bhūyo gṛhapater dattāḥ.  suvarnaṃ saṃvṛttam.  athā rājā prasenajid vismaya- jātaḥ.  gatvā Bhagavato nivedayati.  Bhagavān āha.  puṇyanirjātā gṛhapater na grāhyā.  sarvaṃ ca tadānupūrveṇa kathitam.  evam eṣa yadā dātā bhavati duḥkhena yācitaḥ samānaḥ pratijānite.  duḥkhena [p. 68] dadāti dattvā ca cittam prasādayati.  tena hetunā pūrvaṃ daridro bhūtvā paścān mahādhano bhavati.  idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalaḥ pūrvaṃ duḥkhito bhūtvā paścāt sukhito bhavati.

 

XXXV.

Katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalaḥ pūrvaṃ ca paścāc ca sukhito bhavati.  Ucyate.  ihaikatyo dānaṃ yācitaḥ sa prahṛṣṭaḥ pratijānīte prahṛṣṭo dadāti.  dattvāpi ca prītimān bhavati. sa yadā manuṣyeṣūpapadyate.  āḍhyeṣu kuleṣūpapadyate mahā- dhāneṣu mahābhogeṣu.  atra bhadrike nagare miṇḍhakaprabhṛtīnāṃ caturṇāṃ dānapatīnāṃ vipāko vaktavyaḥ taiḥ kila tagaraśikhī pratyekabuddhaḥ piṇḍapātena pratipāditaḥ.  atra vinayāvadānaṃ vaktavyam.  idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalaḥ pūrvaṃ ca paścāc ca sukhito bhavati.

 

XXXVI.

Katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalaḥ pūrvaṃ ca paścāc ca duḥkhito bhavati.  Ucyate.  ihaikatyaḥ kalyāṇamitra virahito bhavati.  sa dānaṃ na dadāti.  na ca tena kiṃcit pāpakaṃ karma kṛtam bhavati.  sa yadā manuṣyeṣūpapadyate daridreṣu kuleṣūpa-  padyate.  alpānna pāna bhojaneṣu.  yathā śravastyāṃ daridradāra- kasyāvadānaṃ varṇayanti.  śrāvastyāṃ kila Bhagavān piṇḍapātam paryaṭati.  tadā ca śrāvastyām ikṣudvādaśī nāma bhavati.  Bhaga- vatā cekṣūṇi labdhāni.  anyatarasmin gṛhadvāre daridradārakas tiṣṭhati.  sa Bhagavantam ikṣūṇi yācati.  Bhagavataikaṃ dattam.  sa [p. 69] bhūyo yācati.  Bhagavān āha.  vatsa.  ucyatām.  necchāmīti te bhūyo dāsyāmīti.  sa prāha.  mayā Bhagavan na kadācin necchāmīty uktam pūrvam.  Bhagavān āha.  vatsa.  ucyatām necchāmi Bhagavan sarvāṇi dāsyāmiti.  tenekṣulobhān necchāmīty uktam.  Bhagavatā sarvāṇi dattāni.  athāryānandaḥ pṛcchati.  Bhagavan kim idam.  Bhagavān āha. na kadācid eṣa ānanda rūparasagandhasparśādināṃ tṛptapūrvo ‘bhavat necchāmīti vā na kadācid uktapūrvam.  tad etasya vacanaṃ tasya necchāmīti hetubhūtam bhaviṣyati.  āha ca. necchāmīty eṣa vyāhāro na kadācid udīritaḥ kuto rūpāṇi śabdāś ca gandhāḥ sparśāś ca vai kutaḥ. ity evaṃ prārthayann eṣa nityam bhramati bāliśaḥ necchāmīti praharṣeṇa yaiṣā vāk samudīritā hetur alpecchatā yaiṣā sa evāsya bhaviṣyati. idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pūrvaṃ ca paścāc ca duḥkhito bhavati.

 

XXXVII.

Katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgala āḍhyo bhavati matsarī.  Ucyate.  ihaikatyenālpamātraṃ dānaṃ dattam bhavati śilavati pātrabhūte na tu punas tyāgacittam abhyastam bhavati. yadā manuṣyeṣupapadyate.  āḍhyeṣu kuleṣūpapadyate mahādhaneṣu mahābhogeṣu.  tena dānaviśeṣeṇa yat tena punas tyāgacittam abhy- astaṃ na bhavati sa tena karmaṇā matsarī bhavati.  yathā śrāvastyāṃ [p. 70] hilliśālagṛhapater avadānam.  sa kila pūrvajanmani matsarī bhavati. atha tasya gṛhadvāre tagaraśikhī nāma pratyekabuddha āgataḥ.  tasya bhikṣā dattā.  tena dṛṣṭvādīyamānā tena kṣavaṇaye na ca bhikṣā dattā sa ca pravrājitaḥ paribhraṣṭaḥ.  sa tena karmaṇā divyamā- nuṣyakāḥ saṃpattayo ‘nubhūya śrāvastyām agra kulikaputraḥ pratyājāto matsarī kālagataḥ.  tasya dravyaṃ rājñā prasenajitāputra- kaṃ gṛhitvā satavarge āgame prasenajitsaṃyukteṣu rājopakīrṇa- kaṃ nāma sūtram.  prasenajid Bhagavataḥ kathayati.  iha Bhagavann agrakulikaḥ kālagataḥ.  tasya mayāputrakaṃ svāpateyaṃ gṛhītam. Bhagavān āha.  katīyam mahārāja gṛhapater dravyaṃ gṛhītam.  sa āha.  śataṃ Bhagavan śatasahasrāṇāṃ yad āhatam pariśiṣṭaṃ dravyam aparimitam anāhatam.  Bhagavān āha.  idaṃ tasya mahārāja saptamam aputrakam dravyagrahaṇam.  yat tena tagaraśikhī nāma pratyekabuddhaḥ piṇḍapātena pratipāditaḥ.  tad asya karma parik- ṣīṇam.  anyac ca kuśalamūlaṃ na kṛtam.  tenādya prathamāyāṃ rātryāṃ mahāraurave narake pacyate.  tatra Bhagavān gāthā bhāṣate. dhanaṃ dhānyaṃ jātarūpaṃ gavāśvamaṇikuṇḍalam dāsakarmakarā bhṛtyā ye cānye anujivinaḥ mriyamāṇasya nānveti nāpi ādāya gacchati. yat tena kṛtam bhavati kalyāṇam atha pāpakam tad dhi tasya svakam bhavati tac ca ādāya gacchati. tasmāt kuruta puṇyānāṃ nicayaṃ sāmparāyikam [p. 71] puṇyāni paraloke ‘smin pratiṣṭhā prāṇināṃ smṛtā gṛhe tiṣṭhati kāyo ‘yaṃ śmaśāne priya bāndhavāḥ sukṛtaṃ duṣkṛtaṃ caiva gacchantam anugacchati. ayam pudgala āḍhyo bhavati matsarī.

 

XXXVIII.

Katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo daridro bhavati tyāgavān.  Ucyate.  ihaikatyena pudgalena bahu dānaṃ dattam bhavati.  tiryaggateṣu manuṣyeṣu ca duḥśīleṣv abrahmacāriṣu. punaḥ punas tyāgacittam abhyastam.  sa yadā manuṣyeṣūpapadyate daridro bhavati tyāgavān tena dānābhyāsena.  yat tu tenāpātrabhūteṣu dānaṃ dattaṃ tena daridraḥ.  yathā śrāvastyāṃ tatra vinaye tantra- vāyasya nidānam varṇayanti.  sa tyāgavān daridraś ca.  punaḥ punas tyāgacittam abhyastam.  idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo daridro bhavati tyāgavān.

 

XXXIX.

Katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgala āḍhyo bhavati tyāgavān.  Ucyate.  ihaikatyena pudgalena bahu dānaṃ dattam bhavati śīlavatsu pātrabhūteṣu punaḥ punas tyāgacittam abhyastam bhavati. sa tena karmaṇā yadā manuṣyeṣūpapadyate.  āḍhyeṣu kuleṣūpa- padyate mahādhaneṣu mahābhogeṣu.  yat tu tena punaḥ punas tyāga- cittam abhyastaṃ tena tyāgavān bhavati.  yathānāthapiṇḍadena kila krakucchande samyaksambuddhe jetavanaṃ niryātitam.  vihāraśca kāritaḥ.  evaṃ kanakamunau samyaksambuddhe kāśyape sarvārtha- siddhe ca.  bhūyaś ca maitreyasya suvarṇāstīrṇaṃ niryātayiṣyati. idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgala āḍhyo bhavati tyāgavān.

katamasya pudgalasyāyuḥ kṣīṇaṃ na karma.  Ucyate.  yaḥ pudgalo narakāc cyuto narakeṣūpapadyate.  tiryagbhyaścyutas [p. 72] tiryakṣūpapadyate.  yamalokāc cyuto yamaloke upapadyate.  devebhyaś cyuto deveṣūpapadyate.  yathā varṣākārasya brāhmaṇasya punaḥ punaḥ kālagatasya markaṭopapattiḥ.  yathā kāsmīrāyām pūrvoktasya gṛhapateḥ punaḥ punaḥ paśūpapattiḥ.  yathā ca śrāvastyāṃ kaścid daridraḥ kuṭumbī kālagataḥ.  tasya gṛhadvāre balīvardo vraṇībhūtena skandhena tiṣṭhati.  sa gṛha āsaktacittaḥ kuṭumbī tasya balīvardasya skandhe kṛmiḥ pratyājātaḥ.  upapannamātraś ca kākena bhakṣitaḥ. punas tatraiva kṛmiḥ pratyājātaḥ.  sa evaṃ saptakṛtva ekadivasena kālagataḥ upapannamātraś ca kākena bhakṣitaḥ.  yathā cārya- mahāmaudgalyāyano magadheṣu bhaikṣyam paryaṭāmāno ‘nyata- magṛhadvāram anuprāptaḥ.  tasmiṃś ca gṛhe gṛhapatiḥ patnīsahito matsyamāṃsaprakāreṇa bhojanam bhuṃkte.  putreṇa paryaṃkagatena kṛṣṇā cāsya kukkurī puraḥ sthitā.  sa tasya matsyā sthinī kṣipati. atha sa gṛhapatir mahāmaudgalyāyanaṃ dṛṣṭvāha.  gamyatām ārya nāsti kaścid atra yo bhikṣāṃ dāsyati.  sa khalu samprasthitaḥ. taśmiṃś ca gṛhadvāre deśāntarābhyāgatāḥ puruṣā vidvāṃsaḥ pūr- vasthitāḥ te taṃ dṛṣṭvā vismayam prāptāḥ.  aho āścaryam ayaṃ nāma ṛddhimatām agryaḥ yena Nandopanandau nāgarājānau vinītau vaijayantaś ca prāsādo vāma pādāṃguṣṭhena kampitaḥ śakro vismā- pitaḥ trisāhasraṃ lokadhātuṃ nimeṣāntaracārī sa nāma bhikṣām adattvā visarjitaḥ.  atha sthaviras teṣāṃ saṃvejanārtham āha.  vatsa. naitad āścaryam.  puruṣā ūcuḥ.  atha kim anyad āścaryam vismaya- kāraṇam.  sa uvāca.  ya eṣa gṛhapatir matsyamāṃsaprakārair bhojanam [p. 73] bhuṃkte eṣa matsyaḥ asya gṛhapateḥ pitā.  tena yā eṣāsya gṛhasya pṛṣṭhataḥ puṣkariṇī ataḥ prabhūtamatsyān uddhṛtyoddhṛtya bhak- ṣitāḥ.  sa kālagato ‘traiva matsyaḥ pratyājātaḥ.  sa eṣo ‘nekaśa uddhṛtyoddhṛtya bhakṣyate.  atraiva ca bhūyo bhūya upapadyate.  yāpy eṣā kukkurī asyaiva gṛhapater mātā.  etayā lobhadoṣeṇa na kiṃcid dānaṃ dattam.  na ca śīlaṃ sevitam.  kevalaṃ kulavaṃśārthaṃ dravyam paripālitam.  sātraiva gṛhe āsaktacittā kālagatā kukkurīṣu pratyājātā.  kālagatā bhūyo ‘traivopapadyate.  sarvāṃ ca rātriṃ gṛhaṃ samantāt paryaṭati.  mātra kaścit praviśed iti.  atha yas tv eṣa  putraḥ paryaṃke kṛtaḥ eṣo ‘syā eva striyāḥ pracchanna bhartā anena ca gṛhapatinā śrutam.  eṣā te patni parapuruṣavyāsaktā jāteti.  sa eṣa gṛhapatir grāmāntara gamanavyapadeśena gṛhān niṣkrāntaḥ.  eṣāpi strī parapuruṣeṇa saha śayitā.  anena gṛhapatinā rātrāv āgamya puruṣo ghātitaḥ.  so’ syām eva striyām āraktacittas tenaiva snehānubandhena kukṣav upapannaḥ.  paśya vatsa yaḥ pitā caiva tasya sa maṃsāni bhakṣayati.  yā mātā janitrī tasyā matsyakaṇṭakāsthikāni dadāti. yaś ca śatruḥ kruddhena māritaḥ pāradārikaḥ tam paryaṃkena dhārayati.  eṣa saṃsāradoṣo nirvedaḥ kāryaḥ.  idam atrāścaryakāra- ṇam.  atha sa bhikṣur mahāmaudgalyāyana etad evārtham sarvam paścimajanatāsaṃvejanārthaṃ ślokena saṃgṛhītavān.  yathāha. pitur maṃsāni khādatemātuḥ kṣipati kaṇṭakān bhāryā jāraṃ ca poṣeti loko mohatamovṛtaḥ ayam pudgalo yasyāyuḥ kṣīṇaṃ na karma. katamaṣya pudgalasya karma kṣīṇāṃ nāyuḥ ucyate.  yaḥ pūrvaṃ sukhito bhūtvā paścād duḥkhito bhavati.  pūrvaṃ yo duḥkhito bhūtvā paścāt sukhito bhavati asya pudgalasya karma kṣīṇaṃ nāyuḥ.

 

XLII.

Katamatasya pudgalasya karma kṣīṇam āyuś ca.  Ucyate.  yaḥ pudgalo narakāc cyutas tiryakṣūpapadyate.  tiryagbhyaś cyuto yama- loke upapadyate.  yamalokāc cyuto manuṣyeṣūpapadyate.  tataś cyuto deveṣūpapadyate.  yathā śrāvastyāṃ viṇikputra udyānaṃ gataḥ puṣpahetoḥ patnīvacanenāśokavṛkṣam ārūḍhaḥ.  sā ca vṛkṣaśākhā viśīrṇā.  sa pāṣānaśilāyām patitaḥ kālagataḥ tatra mahājanakāyo rudati.  atha bhikṣavo divāvihāraṃ gatāḥ.  taṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃvignā Bhagavato nivedayanti.  Bhagavanu aho anityatā.  atrodyāne gṛhapa- tiputro bālo ‘bhuktabhogo ‘śokavṛkṣāt patitaḥ kālagataḥ.  tatra mahā- janakāyaḥ saṃnipatitaḥ rauravasadṛśaś ca śabdaḥ śrūyate.  Bhagavān āha.  eṣa eva bhikṣavaḥ gṛhapatiputraḥ pūrvam mahāsamudre ‘nya- tarasmin nāgakule upapannaḥ.  sa tatra jātamātra eva strīsahitaḥ krīḍamāno garuḍenoddhṛtya bhakṣitaḥ.  tatra nāgakanyā rudanti iha striyo rudanti.  sa ca yasyāḥ striyā vacanenāśokavṛkṣam ārūḍhas tasyo- pary āghātaṃ kṛtavān.  asyā doṣeṇāhaṃ vṛkṣam ārūḍhaḥ.  kruddhaḥ kālagato narakeṣūpapannaḥ.  asya pudgalasya karma kṣīṇam āyuś ca.

 

XLIII.

katamasya pudgalasya puṇyāni ca kṣiṇāni āyuś ca. [p. 75] ucyate.  yathā sa eva hilliśālī gṛhapatiḥ.  yathā Bhagavān āha.  tasya punar mahārāja gṛhapates tac ca kuśalaṃ karma parikṣīṇam anyac ca na kṛtam.  so ‘dya prathamarātriṃ raurave pacyate.  yathā rājā prasenajid rājyād bhraṣṭo rājagṛham anuprāptaḥ.  sa tatra purāṇa- mūlakapattrāṇi mukhe prakṣipya khādan puruṣeṇākṣiptaḥ.  śyāsu- pūrṇena mukhenātha maranaṃ mṛtaḥ.  pratyekabuddhapūrvas tasya [pūrvasya?] piṇḍapātasya vipākena.  ayam pudgalo yasyāyuś ca kṣīṇam puṇyāni ca.

katamaḥ pudgalaḥ kāyena sukhī na cittena.  Ucyate. kṛtapuṇyaḥ pṛthagjanaḥ kāyena sukhī na cittena.  yathā mahādhana- brāhmaṇagṛhapatayo rājā ca māndhātā.  ayam pudgalaḥ kāyena sukhī na cittena.

 

XLV.

katamaḥ pudgalaś cittena sukhi na kāyena.  Ucyate.  yathā- rhann apuṇyaḥ cittena sukhī na kāyena.  yathārya śoṇottaras tena kila pūrvajanmani pratyekabuddhasya snāyato gomayapiṇḍakaḥ kapikacchumiśraḥ snānārthaṃ dattaḥ.  tena karma vipākena kuṣṭhena śarīraṃ viśīryati.  tathā hi gāthā bhāṣitā. [p. 76] karmāṇi nūnam balavattarāṇi karmabhyo vajrakalpebhyaḥ yatra vaśībhūto ‘ham anubhavāmi duḥkhāni karmāṇi. yathā ca jaṃghākāśyapaḥ.  tena kila vārāṇasyām pratyekabuddhasya pratiśrutam.  bhaktaṃ dāśyāmīti .  sa tasya mahatā pariśrameṇa kālāti- kramaṇe āsanne bhaktaṃ dattavān.  sa tena karmaṇā paścime janmani vitarāgo ‘pi bhūtvā pūrvāhṇe piṇḍapātam paryaṭati.  kālāti- kramaṇe āsanne kathaṃcid bhaktaṃ labhate.  tathāsya jaṃghākā- śyapa eva nāma.  ayam pudgalaś cittena sukhī na kāyena.

 

XLVI.

katamaḥ pudgalaḥ kāyena sukhī cittena ca.  Ucyate.  arhan kṣīṇāsravaḥ kṛtapuṇyaḥ.  yathā kaśmīrarājā dharmayaśaḥputro Bakulaḥ.  tathā hy asya siṃhanādaḥ.  aśītir me āyuṣmanto varṣāṇi pravrajitasya na kadācid vyādhir bhūtapūrvaḥ.  antataḥ śiro’rti- mātram api .  tena kila vārāṇasyāṃ gāndhikabaṇijā bhūtvā kakucchandaḥ samyaksambuddhaḥ saśrāvakasaṃgho glāna bhaiṣa- jyenopanimantrito bhikṣuṇā cārhatā ekā harītakī gṛhītā.  sa tasya karmaṇo vipākena nirābādhaḥ.  ārogyaparamā lābhā uktā Bhagavatā yathā cāryāniruddhaḥ kathayati.  tasya khalv āyuṣmantaḥ piṇḍa- pātasya vipākena saptakṛtvaḥ praṇīte trayastriṃśadevanikāye upapannaḥ saptakṛtvo manuṣyeṣu rājyaṃ kāritam.  tasyaiva ca piṇḍa- [p. 77] pātasya vipākenārhatvaphalalābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglāna- pratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇāṃ lābhi.  tathā hi tasya Bhagavatā durbhikṣe pañca bhikṣuśatāni dattāni.  tasya puṇyānubhāvena sarveṣāṃ divyam ananta bhaktam prādurbhavati.  ayaṃ pudgalaḥ kāyena sukhī cittena ca.

 

XLVII.

katamaḥ pudgalo na kāyena sukhī na cittena ca.  akṛta- puṇyāḥ pṛthagjanā utsannakulavaṃśā vastrānnapānavirahitāḥ para- gṛheṣu hiṇḍanti.  tathā vyādhibhiḥ kuṣṭhakṣayakāsajvarapāṇḍu- rogadadrupāmādibhiḥ parigatā hastapādavikalāś cakṣurvihīnāś ca. ayam pudgalo na kāyena sukhī na cittena.

 

XLVIII.

Katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo ‘pāyeṣūpa- panno ‘bhirūpo bhavati prāsādikaḥ snigdhakāyaḥ snigdhacchavir nayanābhirāmo darśanīyaḥ.  Ucyate.  yaḥ pudgalo rāgasamutthitena dauḥśīlyena samanvāgataḥ apāyeṣūpapadyate.  yathā mayūraśukha- sārikākāraṇḍavacakravākaprabhṛtayaḥ.  idaṃ karma yena samanv- āgataḥ pudgalo ‘pāyeṣūpapanno ‘bhirūpo bhavati prāsādikaḥ snigdha- kāyaḥ snigdhacchavir nayanābhirāmo darśanīyaḥ.

 

XLIX.

Tatra katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo ‘pāyeṣū- papanno durvarṇo bhavati rūkṣakāyo ghoradarśanaḥ.  Ucyate.  yaḥ pudgalo dveṣasamutthitena dauḥśīlyena samanvāgato ‘pāyeṣūpapa- dyate.  yathā siṃhavyāghrakākaśṛgālakṛṣṇasarpapretapiśācādayaḥ. idaṃ karma yena apāyeṣūpapanno durvarṇo bhavati rūkṣakāyo ghoradarśanaḥ.

Tatra katamat karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo ‘pāyeṣūpa- panno durgandho bhavati jihmendriyo ‘vyaktendriyaḥ ucyate.  yaḥ pudgalo mohasamutthitena dauḥśīlyena samanvāgataḥ apāyeṣūpapa- [p. 78] dyate.  yathā chuchundarīkṛmyajagarayūkāmakṣikādayo yathā śarīre viṃśatikṛmijātayaḥ.  idaṃ karma yena samanvāgataḥ pudgalo ‘pāyeṣupapanno durgandho bhavati jihmendriyo ‘vyaktendriyaḥ.

 

LI.

daśākuśalaḥ karmapathāḥ katame daśa.  trividhaṃ kāyakarma. caturvidhaṃ vākkarma.  trividham manaskarma.  eṣāṃ daśānām akuśa- lānāṃ karmapathānāṃ vipākena daśānām bāhyānām bhāvānām abhi- vṛddhir bhavati.

 

LII.

prāṇātipātasyākuśalakarmapathasya vipākena pṛthivyā ojaś ca tejaś cāntardhīyate.  tasyaiva ca karmaṇo vipākenālpāyur bhavati.

 

LIII.

adattādānasyākuśalasya karmapathasya vipākena pṛthivyām aśaniśukaśalabhamūṣikakīṭaprabhṛtayaḥ [sasyaghāsakā utpadya]nte. tasyaiva karmaṇo vipākena bhogavyasanam adhigacchati.

 

LIV.

kāmamithyācārasyākuśalasya karmapathasya vipākena pṛthi- vyāṃ tṛṇadarbhādīni durgandhīni prādurbhavanti.  tasyaiva kar- maṇo vipākena sampannagṛhāvāsam praviśanti.  atrāvadānaṃ śvabhrapadasya susudhī dārikā kāsirājñaḥ patnī devāvataraṇe kālo- dayinaḥ pūrvajanmany avadānaṃ vaktavyam.

 

LV.

mṛṣāvādasyākuśalasya karmapathasya vipākena mukharoga- [p. 79] dantaroga galarogamukhadaurgandhyādīni prādurbhavanti.  tasyaiva karmaṇo vipākenābhutākhyānaṃ pratilabhate.

 

LVI.

piśunavacanasyākuśalasya karmapathasya vipākena pṛthi- vyāṃ.  śarkarakaṭhallyādīni duḥkhasaṃsparśādīni prādurbhavanti. tasyaiva karmaṇo vipākena jātivyasanā mitravyasanā bhavanti bhedyaḥ parivāraś ca bhavati.

 

LVII.

paruṣavacaso ‘kuśalakarmapathasya vipākena pāṃśurajo- dhūlivātavṛṣtyādīni prādurbhavanti.  tasyaiva karmaṇo vipākenāma- nojñaśabdaśravaṇadarśanāny anubhavanti.

 

LVIIĪ#.  sambhinnapralāpasyākuśalasya karmapathasya vipākena… kandaraśvabhrādīni prādurbhavanti.  tasyaiva karmaṇo vipākenānā- deyavacanā bhavanti.

 

LIX.

abhidhyāyā akuśalasya karmapathasya vipākena vrīhiyava- godhūmādīnāṃ sasyānāṃ tuṣapalālā dīni prādurbhavanti.  tasyaiva karmaṇo vipākena paraprārthanīyabhogā bhavanti.

 

LX.

vyāpādasyākuśalakarmapathasya vipākena prabhūte upte niṣphalaṃ sasyam bhavati.  tasyaiva karmaṇo vipākena pratikūladar- śano bhavati.

 

LXI.

mithyādṛṣṭer akuśalasya karmapathasya vipākena tiktakaṭu- [p. 80] kabhāvāny api picumandakoṣātakīviṣatiktālābuprabhṛtīni phalāni prādurbhavanti.  mithyādṛṣṭer akuśalasya karmapathasya vipākena nāstikyavādi bhavanti.  ucchedadṛṣṭiḥ lokāyatādiṣu ca śāstreṣu prasādo bhavati.  yathā padāśvasya rājaputrasya yaḥ kumārakāśyapena śve- tikāyāṃ vinīto lokāyatikaḥ.  yathā yathā sattvā imān daśākuśalān karmapathān bhāvayanti tathaiṣāṃ daśānām bāhyānām bhāvānām atīva prādurbhāvo bhavati.  anenaiva ca kāraṇena mahāsaṃvartakalpe bhaviṣyati samayo ‘nāgate ‘dhvani yat tilā bhaviṣyanti tilapiṣṭaṃ bhaviṣyati tailaṃ na bhaviṣyati ikṣur bhaviṣyati ikṣutaso na bhaviṣyati guḍo na bhaviṣyati.  na khaṇḍam bhaviṣyati na śarkarā bhaviṣyanti. gāvo bhaviṣyanti kṣīram bhaviṣyati dadhi bhaviṣyati navanītaṃ na bhaviṣyati na ghṛtaṃ na gḥrtamaṇḍo bhaviṣyati.  evam anupūrveṇa sarveṇa sarve rasā antardhāsyanti. a)## atra gaṃgāsaṃtāre Bhagavataḥ pratyekabuddhasya stūpe dat- tasya chattrasya vipāko varṇyate.  yathā cārya sundaranando vyāka- roti. jentākasya ca snānena tālasyālepanena ca  ekacchattrapradānāc ca prāptā me suvarṇavarṇatā. evamādi chattrapradānasya vipāko vaktavyaḥ.  āha ca. [p. 86, blank] [p. 87] yad dhāryate pravaradaṇḍam udārarūpaṃ kodaṇḍadāmaparimaṇḍitavastikośam chattraṃ viśālam amalaṃ śaśimaṇḍalābham chattrapradānajanitena jagaddharasya. śricihnabhūtam maṇihemadaṇḍam paṭojjvalaṃ kāñcanam ātapatram yad dhāryate mūrdhni narādhipasya chattrapradānena jagaddharasya ime daśānuśaṃsaś chattrapradānasya.

 

LXV.

katame daśānuśaṃsā ghaṇṭāpradānasya.  Ucyate.  abhirūpo bhavati.  susvaro bhavati.  manojñabhāṣī bhavati.  kalaviṃkarutabhāṣī bhavati.  ādeyavākyo bhavati.  nityaṃ samprahāryajāto bhavati. punaḥ punar ānandaṃ śabdaṃ śṛṇoti.  svargeṣūpapadyate.  mahā- bhogaś ca bhavati.  kṣipraṃ ca parinirvāti.

 

a)## yathā viśākhayā mṛgāramātrā Bhagavān pṛṣṭaḥ.  katham mama prāsāde nityaṃ kālam pañcāṇgikaṃ tūryaṃ sadaiva vadet.  Bhagavān [p. 88] āha.  sarvasvaropetāṃ ghaṇṭām āropaya.  evaṃ te nityaṃ kālam prāsāde pañcāṃgikatūryaśabdo bhaviṣyati.  anavadyaś ca.  ime daśa guṇā ghaṇṭāpradānasya. [p. 89]

[1] Karma Vibhanga: The present translation has been made from the Tibetan version of the text, since we know it to be complete and well-edited.  In resolving textual issues we have also referred to the Sanskrit and Chinese versions.  In situ we will normally use simple pronunciation in referring to languages other than English; but will give the full transcriptions or Chinese characters in the bibliography in the appendices below, and where footnotes would require them.  Please see bibliography entry %S1, KL00338 for details of editions used.  We will also be adding section numbers in square braces and a smaller font, for ease in referring to any particular text section.

[2] First division of the text: The “division” here (bam-po in Tibetan) is not a subject division but simply a division of text quantity, similar to a byte count in a digital text, used to help in detecting omissions from or additions to the original.

[3] I bow down: It was a custom for scholars translating ancient Buddhist texts from Sanskrit into Tibetan to bow down to specific holy persons or objects, to help the reader identify the subject of the work.  At the beginning of a work belonging to the section on vowed morality, the translator should bow down to omniscience; and at the beginning of a work belonging to the section on higher knowledge, to glorious Gentle Voice; and at the beginning of a work belonging to the section on the sutras, to the Buddhas and bodhisattvas.

This line is not part of the original sutra but is found in our edition.  As the native catalog to the Lhasa edition of the Kangyur also notes (at f. 25b, %B1, KL04568) there is no colophon to this version identifying the translators; although the alternate version does include one and lists the translators as the Indian pandits Jinamitra, Danashila, and Munivarma; and the Tibetan master translator Bande Yeshe De.

[4] An altar where creatures are sacrificed: The older traditions in India, prior to the coming of the Buddha, taught that the sacrifice of animals was a spiritual path.

[5] The city of Kasmarya: The Sanskrit suggests that this was a city named Kashmir, probably relating to the modern area of this name.

[6] The monk was an enemy destroyer: “Enemy destroyer” is a Buddhist technical term which describes a person who has reached the level where they have already seen emptiness directly, and used this experience to destroy, one by one, the enemies of their own negative emotions.  This level is also what we call “nirvana,” which literally means to “blow out” the fire of these emotions.

[7] Enjoying the spectacle: The Buddha is saying that even actions like enjoying a war movie plant negative karmic seeds which shorten our life.

[8] The Sutra on Darkness: The sutra is identified in the Sanskrit original as the Kalika Sutra.  {@might be Kalika Purana, have Ben check when get some internet}  It doesn’t seem to be extant in modern times.  Ananda was a close disciple of this Buddha.

[9] The demons can never touch: Presumably referring to the Sutra on Darkness just quoted, although that was in prose, and this in verse.

[10] How good it would be to strike: Needless to say, this would apply to military or any other kind of violence, performed for example with weapons.
